Insulin Resistance: What It Is, How to Recognize It, and How to Reverse It

Signs That May Indicate Insulin Resistance
Insulin resistance rarely has specific symptoms, but there are indirect signs:
- Visceral abdominal fat: especially if the rest of the body is normal, fat concentrated in the abdomen is a strong signal
- Acanthosis nigricans: thickening and darkening of the skin in folds (neck, armpits, groin) — a characteristic sign of hyperinsulinemia
- Intense fatigue after high-carbohydrate meals
- Intense cravings for sweets or carbohydrates in the afternoon
- Difficulty losing weight despite diet and exercise
- High triglycerides and low HDL on blood tests
- Hypertension (hyperinsulinemia increases renal sodium reabsorption)
- Polycystic ovary syndrome in women (PCOS is closely associated with IR)
Connection with Metabolic Syndrome
