What is glycemic control and why is it so important

Glycemic control means keeping blood glucose levels as much as possible within a safe and stable range, generally between 70 and 140 mg/dL throughout the day. It doesn't mean achieving perfect numbers at all times — that's impossible and only leads to unnecessary frustration.

The real goal is to reduce sharp peaks and drops, because these fluctuations are what cause fatigue, sudden hunger, and a feeling of instability. Stability is more useful than rigidity. Blood sugar that fluctuates less is easier to manage and more protective for the body in the long run.

Type 2 diabetes explained simply

Not all targets are the same for every person. Age, therapy, hypoglycemia risk, and diabetes duration change the goals that need to be agreed upon with the doctor. A frail eighty-year-old will have different targets than a fifty-year-old with no complications.

Important: do not compare yourself to other patients. The best comparison is always with your own progress over the past few weeks. The direction of improvement matters more than the absolute number.
