Basal Metabolism: What It Is, How to Calculate It, and How to Use It for Weight Loss

Basal metabolism is the amount of calories your body burns simply to stay alive — breathing, pumping blood, regulating temperature, keeping cells active. It is the starting point for any diet or weight loss plan.

What is Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR)

Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) is the minimum amount of energy (calories) consumed by the body at complete rest, at a neutral temperature, and after a 12-hour fast. It accounts for 60–75% of the total daily caloric needs of a sedentary person.

It is different from TDEE (Total Daily Energy Expenditure) — total caloric needs — which also includes physical activity, post-meal thermogenesis, and spontaneous daily activity.

How to Calculate Basal Metabolic Rate: Formulas

Harris-Benedict Formula (1919, revised 1984)

The most common, simple but less accurate for people with atypical body composition:

  • Men: BMR = 88.36 + (13.40 × weight kg) + (4.80 × height cm) − (5.68 × age)
  • Women: BMR = 447.60 + (9.25 × weight kg) + (3.10 × height cm) − (4.33 × age)

Mifflin-St Jeor Formula (1990) — the most accurate without BIA

  • Men: BMR = (10 × weight kg) + (6.25 × height cm) − (5 × age) + 5
  • Women: BMR = (10 × weight kg) + (6.25 × height cm) − (5 × age) − 161

Katch-McArdle Formula — the most precise with body composition

Uses lean mass instead of total weight, eliminating the error from body fat. Requires body composition measurement with BIA:

  • BMR = 370 + (21.6 × lean mass in kg)

For a man weighing 80 kg with 20% body fat (= 64 kg lean mass): BMR = 370 + (21.6 × 64) = 370 + 1382 = 1752 kcal/day

How to Increase Basal Metabolic Rate

BMR is not fixed — it can be increased over time with targeted interventions:

  • Resistance training: building 1 kg of muscle adds ~13 kcal/day to BMR. It's not a lot per session, but it accumulates over time
  • Avoid excessively low-calorie diets: deficits > 700–800 kcal/day activate metabolic adaptation mechanisms that reduce BMR by 10–15%
